Motorola took a huge financial loss between 2007 and 2009 totaling $4.3 billion dollars; this caused the company to split in two in January 2011. The company that produces phones is known as Motorola Mobility and is owned by Google.
The headquarters of this Motorola company is located in Libertyville, Illinois. These are the people who pushed forward the flip phone in the 1990′s and once we made it into the 21st century, made the original RAZR; the first super thin phone of the day.
Motorola Mobility was slow in getting into the digital age of smartphones till 2010. Not shortly after, on August 15, 2011, Google agreed to buy the company for $12.5 billion dollars. Google received many patents owned by Motorola.
However, it was not until February 13, 2012 that Google received approval from the US Department of Justice and European Union on the merger. The People’s Republic of China approved the merger a little while later, on May 19, 2012; this allowed the merger to be made complete on May 22, 2012.
Motorola shifted its Operating systems from their proprietary software to Google’s Android operating system and in October 2009, Motorola announced a forthcoming smartphone named “Droid” that launched on the Verizon network on November 6, 2009. “Droid” was a major success for Motorola Mobile Devices. It received the prestigious “Time Gadget of the Year” award in 2009. In 2010, Motorola launched “Droid X” and “Droid 2″. Droid X was again a major success, which has helped Motorola to regain much of its market share in the US.
